Should Guernsey embrace solar farms?

Ben Le Huray, Managing Director of Little Green, said: “While we focus primarily on commercial and residential solar systems, we do recognise the potential for larger solar developments on suitable brownfield sites in Guernsey. It’s essential, however, to ensure that these developments provide clear environmental benefits. We would not support solar farms on greenfield sites unless they use elevated agrivoltaics systems, which allow agricultural use to continue alongside energy generation.

“We believe there remains a significant opportunity in rooftop solar for Guernsey. Little Green has delivered three megawatts of installed capacity so far and our hope for the local industry is to deliver a minimum of one megawatt year on year, which we expect to rise as take up increases across the island. The UK’s ‘Rooftop Revolution’, a government-backed initiative to encourage homeowners to adopt solar technology, could be replicated in Guernsey which would help the island meet its sustainability goals of net-zero by 2050, reducing energy waste and providing long-term financial benefits.”
