All aboard! Little Green partners with The Youth Commission to bring to life a new community space

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of supporting Guernsey’s Youth Commission to create “The Bus Stop” initiative. The concept was simple - to build a fully functional mobile youth club that could be parked up in different locations around the island and run on sunshine. Young people can turn up at any given location and reap the reward of finding their place to belong, a place they can make friends, explore hobbies, and have fun in a safe environment.

While this brief may sound simple, in reality it was a technical but welcome challenge for our team. For “The Bus Stop” to be fully self-sufficient, the bus itself had to generate and store enough electricity to power the entertainment, even when it was parked and turned off. The onboard lighting, speaker system and kitchenette all require power, and with a rig our team had never encountered before, the logistics planning was no mean feat. We worked with DLM Architects to devise a design that incorporated three solar panels on the roof and an adaptive battery storage system hidden at the back of the bus. With the help of JL Innovations who provided the fabrications, our team then brought this design to life.

This is the perfect example of what the Little Green team can achieve when we get excited about a cause. It was a full company project that our entire 12-person team worked on. We donated 160 hours’ worth of time and £2,500 worth of materials into the initiative. This is the first charity project of this scale that Little Green has ever done, but we don’t intend it to be our last.

If you’re a local charity and you need help to create something that benefits both our local community and our planet, then call the Little Green team. After the success and fulfilment we gained from this first venture, we look forward to many new challenges of this sort in the future. Watch this space.
